Still not painted those Plasma gunners and I now have a 750 point game on Wednesday after a day spent looking at tanks. So I now have till tuesday to finish 2 guys paint 2 more build and paint and officer and paint my Sabatorum (Guardsman Marbo) conversion. That -is- the only bright spot as Marbo is nearly ready to go. His left arm is held on by blu-tack but close enough. Bit of a last minute change on the ripper pistol, it was to be a shotgun type thing but has now become a needler instead. Suits the poison theme a little better.

Greeting Commander Morat!
Ive been struggling with my armies paint scheme choice for some time now. Your work has greatly inspired me.
I will be using your gray and granite combination. It looks very good and I find that it fits very well for an urban army.
Just a question do:
Whats steps, techniques, paints did you use to create the shades on the grey cloth parts of the uniforms? Its hard to tell just by looking at the pics. Did you use inks, wash, or something else?
Anyways, keep up the super great work!

Pretty straightforward. On the rank and file it's just adeptus battlegrey followed by a 50/50 mix of badab black and water heavily applied. Once this is dry Adeptus battlegrey is applied everywhere except the recesses.
Slightly flashier approach is as above but with a 70/30 mix of Adeptus and Dheneb applied on the tops of folds.
Have a 750 point force finished now. Time for some more photography. Have started work on some penal legion. Hadn't realised Cadian bodies don't mix with catachan legs so easily (you end up with 2 belts) still cutting one or the other away adds still more variation.

Right, that's the first legionnaire built. Really not sure about this, particularly the pose. Pretty much everything I tried to do first here failed. Which either leads to a superior, refined effort or a fudge. Not sure where this lies so any C&C will be hugely appreciated. They're going to be a real mixed bag anyway with the only real unifying feature being the Catachan legs (being the only suitable ones I have. ) At least they'll give me some time away from Charandon granite!

Thanks for the painting tip! I will mot definitively try it out.
Your legionnaire looks good. My only problem is the knife arm from the empire militia sprue. I never liked that piece...I find the knife to be to much from the "butter knife" category lol!
Apart from that, its a very dynamique pose. :-P

Well you know what prisoners can get up to with a blunt butter knife and a concrete wall. Going to have some armed with improvised clubs I think. Razorblade in a toothbrush? Snooker ball in a sock?

Bloody awesome stuff mate!! Such a simple scheme, yet so effective.
Can we please have a few close ups on different individuals in your comand squad?
How do you get the highlighting so fine on the armour edges?

I do have a super high resolution compilation shot, bit of a browser killer, so had to find a different web host (though any host is better than photobucket really). You'll find it here: www.imagebam.com/image/efd5a343278189As for fineness of lines, the above will show what a shambles they really are. Generally I just make sure my paint is well watered on a wet palette apply the lines pretty quickly (and inaccurately) then go back in with charandon granite to straighten them up. Painting the required straight(ish) lines is just about using a smooth and steady motion with my hands braced together to reduce shake. On current projects, the first legionnaire has had a slight arm based makeover, as it became apparent that the left arm was far too short compared to the right. Still some greenstuffing and of course basing still to do then back to the painting table we go.

First sample one complete, taken rather longer than planned though. Dreadful flash photography as I can't trust the weather far enough for an outside shoot at the mo'. Didn't really try and paint the orange grimy as I'd intended to weather it later. It seems to come out that way with a Baal red wash automatically. Fortunatly I can't think of anything else I would ever want wearing an orange suit.

really nice conversions like the orange jump suits, they will look really cool on a gaming board [glow=blue,2,300]EDIT :[/glow] hmmm......the orange suit makes me think of the flight suit from starwars that Luke wears, but the head and club remind me ob barbarians. i've seen a Valk painted by one of the staff at GW in Aberdeen with the pilots painted like that, with "wedge" on one of the helmets, can't remember the other one's name

Awesome paintjob on your first penal legionnaire! He definitely fits the bill of the scum of the Imperium. I hope he manages to find redemption at the next battle!

Did some more photography today, A better pic of that Penel Legionaire included. Nearly have the next two done (I have been slacking otherwise). Have done some more to him since the last pic. The club was rubbish so it's had a better highlighting job done on it. Platoon command squad. Should have had one of the plasma guns side on. Went on a many inks frenzy on the coils. I'd usually use black between the "wires" but tried an entirely ink based approach here. And finally, My Officio Sabatorum Operative. The dearth of information on these fellas gave me free reign to do as I wanted. Trying to stop him looking like an Officio Assassinorum type was my main aim. Hopefully I'll have some more Penal legion to show in the next few days.

Excellent work on all fronts. I'm currently working on a command squad myself, and I know they'll look nothing like that.
Also, the blue highlighting on the last model's armor is brilliant.
Keep us posted.

I absolutely love your penal legion - they look just like the art in the codex! Amazing weathering on the armour too, I'd be your best friend forever if you did a step-by-step or something on how you managed it

Rat's, I've just this minute finished doing some more rusty bits on these two I'm polishing off now! I'll do a photo series on the next batch then.
Thanks for the positivity Gentlemen.
Any ideas what I should do with the Custodian? Not even sure if he's supposed to be a "trusted" prisoner or a prison officer. I suspect the latter but not sure.

A Custodian is essentially a Warden for the squad. Having him in a special uniform, or using the Arbi models from Necromunda might work.

Any ideas what I should do with the Custodian? Not even sure if he's supposed to be a "trusted" prisoner or a prison officer. I suspect the latter but not sure. He's supposed to be a Junior Commissar who failed to become a commissar for one reason or another. He'll most likely be wearing Chaos black(Just Black if you dont use the GW colors) fatigues(sp?),with Scab Red armor(A Darkish red),and a Sunburst Yellow trim(Bright Yellowish+light Orangish mix). Next to all that, he will have a special badge, but I dont know what it looks like. Hope that helps, ColonelCommisar

Ah, good detail there colonelcommisar. Where's it hail from though? I'm guessing Gav Thorpe's 13th Legion stuff. Was thinking of black and white for a scheme, but commisarial colours might help tie the army together better. As for weapons, I might be able to Plastruct him up a nightstick, but thinking about it this could be a use for the Cadian "swagger stick". Edit: I appear to have sat up till 3am painting again. Well might as well show I've achieved something from my insomnolance. 3 Penal Legion done and rendered in flashovision. Really does make a pig ear of my black highlighting.
