Thanks! I've got a small update today. Finally I got some more lascannons, so I was able to finish assembling the Vendetta. First the heavy bolter guys and their new heads. Then the Vendetta itself. Since I like to go with WYSIWYG I decided to model a searchlight for the Vendetta as well. I just took a basic shield from my WHFB bitz box and used some liquid green stuff, it didn't turn out as well as I though it would but I hope it'll be okay after painting. Twin-linked lascannons. I have to say I'm kinda proud of myself, usually I don't spend this much time, money and effort to make my models WYSIWYG. That's all from today. Today I'll be painting some goblins, but next time I'll have either some more painted guardsmen or some more WIP pics of the Vendetta. I undercoated the Vendetta today, so you'll be able to see some paint on it soon.

Those Lascannons look great, are they from heavy weapons teams?

@ Burt Hoovis: Thanks! They're indeed from heavy weapon teams. The Vendetta has gotten some paint on it, finally! Here's my thoughts about the color schemes of my planes and panzers. The main color will be black, but there'll be straight edged khaki design (no camo pattern or anything like that, just some khaki patterning) and symbols from shaman drum every here and there. That looks kinda cool at least in my mind, but we'll see if that works out well. First my painted heavy bolter guys. I'm very sorry about the quality of pictures today, I was gaming all day so I didn't have time to take pictures until it was dark and I had to use my ****** light bulbs. And then the Vendetta itself. This is still veeery WIP, I've just highlighted the edges of the black parts and started adding some base colors to the metal parts. I also painted the "mud mat" of the Vendetta, even though I have no intentions to paint the details on the walls. One does not simply see inside a Vendetta and witness the laziness of the painter! That's all from today. Next time I'll have some more pics of the progress of the Vendetta. I also have another group of five guardsmen ready to be undercoated, so they'll be on my working desk sooner or later. This Saturday I'll get my hands on the battleforce, so after that I can start the mass production of plasma weapons!

Thanks! Finally the Vendetta (which has awesome name by the way, it always reminds me of this video) is finished! I've never spent this much time on a single model, but I think it was worth it. And then its base. I tried painting some dirty water, and I think it turned out okay after all. That's all from today, next time I'll have another bunch of five Spruce Swamp Fighters.

@ chapwilliams: Thanks, that tutorial looks awesome! I can honestly say I had no idea how to paint a searchlight, but I'll most definitely repaint it tomorrow with the aid of that tutorial.

I'm back! I've been working on my WHFB stuff for a while, but after playing my first 40k game a couple of days ago the Spruce Swamp Fighters have caught my interest again. Here's some IG stuff I've worked on while I was away. First of all a couple of painted Spruce Swamp Fighters - yeah, only two. A pitiful amount, but at least I got some Bretonnians painted! I have now a grand total of 12 infantry troops painted. Then some conversions! First one of my sergeants, he has a laspistol and a power axe. The axe is from WHFB Dwarf set, a friend of mine gave me a whole bunch of axes when he heard I needed some power axes for my sergeants so that's where it is from. Then a flamer guy, his legs are from a heavy weapon team set. Then... this guy. Yeah. I wanted some more comedy appearance in my blobs, so I made this guy. Look out for that swinging lasgun! His pose is kinda stupid, but that's what he's supposed to look like. Then a couple of grenade launcher guys! I played with some instant mold and green stuff an came up with these things. The grenade launchers are still a bit WIP, they need some more work on them, but that's what they look like at the moment. And I started assembling my second Vendetta! This one was a bit easier than the first since I learned a lot about building that cockpit while working on the first one. The lascannons and the heavy bolter guys are still WIP. That's all from today. Next time I'll have some more random guardsmen, this time possibly with some paint on them! Also you'll see a bit more progress on the Vendetta. - Cheers, Perkele

Thanks! I've got some more stuff today. First some of the painted miniatures. My first flamer. "If you love me, follow me!"My first Commissar. I really like the Commissars made by GW, I personally think they're one of the coolest 40k models they've ever made. I'm planning on buying one of each Commissar as the army gets bigger and bigger. I'm not sure who is this model, he was a part of my friend's army, he had no sword and the bolt pistol is clearly converted (it's plastic and the rest of the model is metal). "Run, you piece of scum!"Them some more WIP miniatures, some mortars. Only four more and they're all assembled. A couple of WIP autocannons, I built these since I don't like proxying. I'll finish these models after getting some regular troops and sergeants assembled and painted. My first power axe sergeant, he's undercoated now. And my undercoated Platoon Commander with his only friend, Rudolf. Some WIP objective markers. I'm looking for ideas what to do, I guess one of them will have a barrel of ale on it. That's all from today, next time some more infantry goodness.

That Commissar is neat, and has definitely been converted heavily. The sword is definitely non standard, and the head looks like it may have been swapped as well. I think the body that Commissar is based on originally had a power axe and possibly a hand flamer (?) which was discontinued years ago by GW (and which I never managed to acquire for my collection), but the head looks like it may have been taken from another Commissar mini--does he have goggles over his eyes? If so, it may have come from another Commissar mini, that was also discontinued, who was armed with a full-on boltgun and power sword--I've got one in my collection.

The model doesn't have goggles, but his head might look a bit different because I filed the over-the-top eagle symbol from his cap. I'm not a big fan of that symbol (it seems to be everywhere!), so I have been filing the symbols from the basic guys as well. The one in the Commissar's chest will stay though, somewhere there has to be a remainder that the Commissar is sent to this spruce swamp forest from a civilized place.
His sword is one from a jungle fighter sprue (I cut it a bit to look smaller though).

Ah yeah, I had noticed that his hat was different. The mini I was thinking of that had the axe didn't have such a high peak on his hat, though, while the one with the goggles did, which had me thinking that there had possibly been a head swap. All good stuff though!

Now I found it! The guy is one of the 2nd edition Commissars, here's a link to some pictures. The guy used to have a hand flamer and an axe. It seems like I have all of those models, but unfortunately my Commissar 1 didn't come with a sword arm. I'll have some more pics tomorrow (not it's already too dark to take pics), I got two very interesting looking guardsmen painted and some autocannons assembled.

Here you go then. The first power axe sergeant. My first Demolition Veteran, this guy carries the demolition charge. What do you think about the gas mask? I'm planning on sculpting gas masks for every Veteran (that'd be the thing that separates my Veterans from my basic troops), but I'm not sure if I like or not the look of the mask style. A couple of regular guardsmen, some random drunken volunteers. Do you guys know where are these models from? I had no idea, but the guys carry lasguns so they probably are IG models. The Platoon Commander. Then some WIP models. My first three grenade launchers, some small progress on these as well. One night I built myself some autocannons so I wouldn't need to proxy them every time I play. All of these models are still veeery WIP, but you can see the basic idea what each guy is doing. A Chinese bootleg autocannon (only $4,99 in every catachan local market, get yourself one now!), a mix of lascannon and Sentinel autocannon parts. And some progress on my second Vendetta as well, only a bit more work on the crewmen and I'll start building the base. That's everything today, next time some more guard thingies. - Cheers, Perkele

Excellent!
I think that the two drunken volunteers/random Guardsmen may, in fact, be from the Tanith Ghosts set?
The sculpt on the gas mask looks pretty good in my opinion.

I've got some more guys painted. This project has started going pretty smoothly, I'm impressed that I have this enthusiasm to paint these basic guardsmen as well - I guess that's just because this is my first 40k army project for years. I got some summer works done as well, so there are some tanks shipping to my home at the moment. I ordered a third Vendetta, two Manticores and a Basilisk (which I'll turn into a Griffon) - some heavy support to help the regular guys against the battle against evil power armour people. I hope assembling those tanks will be a blast, especially because I have to convert the Griffon and I have some plans with the Manticore missiles and magnets. How cool would that be if I magnetized the missiles and removed one from the model every time it shoots one? Anyway, here's some guardsmen. First of all a couple of power axe sergeants. The first one (who, by the way, has a great "WTF is that" impression on his face) is just a plain guardsman with a simple weapon swap. The second one is a Catachan power fist officer. I swapped his right arm with a Catachan command squad power sword arm, after that I replaced the sword with an axe. Quite simple, but quite nice as well. I think the model itself is great. Then a couple of flamer guys. Nothing too impressive here, but here they are. The second one has a nice stubble beard, I guess I could start painting those more. Also his face is great! Then a basic, five-point guardsman. I thought it'd be a fun idea to make some of the guys squelching through some dirty water. Here's another Commissar. Unfortunately his face seems to be still WIP (his hands are way more light-coloured than his face, and the face is a bit flat anyways), but otherwise he's ready. This is another 2nd edition model. And finally the base of my second Vendetta! Next time I'll have three painted flamer guys, after that I'll start painting my second Vendetta. If any of the tanks come from the post in the meantime, I might get distracted but at least there'll be something interesting to see. - Cheers, Perkele

I didn't comment your thread before - my bad. Awesome minis here, especially those Vendetta crewman! Another project that makes me want to leave those eldars and go back to my guard... As for the gas mask I think it looks ok, but... a little to big (maybe it's just that photo). And one question - how do you paint black uniforms? It looks superb!

Thanks! I agree that the gas mask looks a bit too bulky from the front, I guess that's the main thing what seems to be wrong with it. I'll keep that in my mind when I sculpt gas masks next time.
I paint black clothing (everything - trousers, uniforms etc) with a very simple technique. First undercoat everything with pure black. After that paint everything except the deepest recesses with very dark grey. Then highlight knees and arse with a bit lighter dark grey. Then highlight the wrinkles (I'm not sure if this is the correct word, but I mean the raised parts of the clothes) with grey, and finally highlight the sharpest edges - if there are any, like edges of a cape - with light grey. Then finish the whole thing with two layers of black wash and it's done. Honestly it's easier and faster than it sounds, especially after doing it once or twice.
Tomorrow I'll have another update, now it's already too dark over here to take any good pics. I have some assembled and some painted guardsmen, also I got myself a new Lord Commissar and proudly added it to my humble commissar collection. Last but not least I finally undercoated my second Vendetta, so I'll be working on that for a while now.
- Cheers, Perkele

Thanks for reply. I didn't expect you can achieve such good results with that simple technique. I thought it's something more complicated. Have to try that myself. Once again - thanks. And I'm waiting for those new photos, I'm sure there will be something great on them.

Great stuff as always! Love that second edition Commissar--I've got him in my collection as well. The guy wading through the mud is especially neat.
