Good job with those power armour guys! Can't wait to see them painted. If they will be as good as your guard, it'll be really great. Are you going to paint them in their standard colours or do you have your own sheme for them?

@ Batou: Thanks! I don't have a colour scheme planned for them yet, but I know they'll be based just like my IG. I'll have to think about the colours, and if you guys have any ideas please let me know! The basic blueish grey, even though it'd be quite unoriginal, is one option since I like the tone very much. One option would be to paint the power armour just like my vehicles, black and khaki, and the cloaks with grey or brown. I'll need to paint a couple of test models to see what would fit with the theme the best and look good as well. I've got some nice stuff from post yesterday - two Manticores! Unfortunately the Griffon was left in the backorder, but I have a plenty of work to do anyway for now. If it comes here within two weeks I have no problem of getting it ready for the tournament at the end of the month. I have been suffering from difficulties falling asleep recently (summer of Finland, don't like it), but if there's a good thing about it it's that I get a lot of assembling and base colours painting done... Here they are, both equipped with heavy flamers. The models still need some green stuffing and filing, but they're assembled all right. A couple side and rear shots. It can be moved! Yay! Now the interesting part. This is my first time trying magnetizing anything (I've decided to magnetize my all WHFB armies' bases someday, but the project has been put off a few times), and this ended up surprisingly painlessly. Since every rocket is one use only, I wanted to magnetize them and physically remove one every time the model shoots a rocket - a nice little touch, makes the models a bit more pleasant visually and I don't need to worry about remembering the amount of rockets left. I had to be careful when placing the magnets since the rockets won't fit in every space of the stand. After figuring out what rocket goes where I placed the magnets so that the rockets will always find their places just by taking a brief look where the magnets are. Now they sit tightly on the stand, and rockets from Manticore A can be put on Manticore B as well with no problem. That's all for now. At the moment my all but one guardsmen are ready for the tournament (not "ready", but they got enough paint on them to counts as painted in the tournament), so for a next few days I'll be working on my vehicles. I have to paint these Manticores, one Vendetta and make the base of the Vendetta. Also I have to assemble and paint the Griffon, but if it doesn't arrive in time I'll just ask if somebody who's going to the event could lend me one for the duration of the tournament. Anyway, hope you like them! - Cheers, Perkele

Yesterday I bought a Drop Pod for the Space Wolves, now they can arrive on the table even cooler way. A group shot of the Space Wolf allies. I think this is enough marines for me for some time, I don't fancy getting any more of these guys before my IG and Bretonnians from WHFB are painted properly. And last but not least my WIP Vendetta. Nothing too special, it'll look like the others I'm afraid. - Cheers, Perkele

I've got another update here. As a nice surprise my Basilisk arrived from the post just yesterday, and I took some time converting it into a Griffon by the aid of this tutorial. I added a third crew member there to highlight the open-toppedness of the tank. The heavy mortar isn't glued yet and I'm going to do some work on it (make the hole where the missiles come out bigger, for example). Then my first painted Manticore. I think it turned out okay overall, somebody pointed out that I should make the weathering effect lighter and I'll consider that. I'm going to name all of my vehicles like the heroes of Kalevala, the Finnish national epic. This has been a theme through my favorite WHFB army as well, O&G, but there aren't any vehicles of course. This one is called Kullervo, a very unlucky and miserable man who couldn't take out his own life despite his hard tries. The second Manticore will be called Kalervo, Kullervo's warlord father. One of my favorite parts of painting 40k stuff are the lenses - so much fun! WIP base of the Vendetta and my fourth meltagun chump. These have been taking so long since I ran out of green stuff mushrooms and I have to make (and wait till they dry) another dozen of them. My third Vendetta is ready now, but I'll have some proper pictures of it when the base is ready as well. In the meantime, here's a group shot of my three Vendettas. I've been working on the paintings on their wings, they're still WIP. The names of the Vendettas. Väinämöinen is the wise seer who could destroy his enemies by singing poems and do other mage activities, Lemminkäinen is the reckless warrior who returned from dead and Ilmarinen is the blacksmith who could make anything out of iron. In the epic these men are almost god-like heroes due to their powerful abilities, the only thing is that they're still mortal, Finnish drunkards running after women. It's a great book, I love it. And a small update on the northern front. For some reason the Drop Pod had only four wolf icons even though it has five doors. Making one icon out of green stuff with the instant mold didn't take for too long, though. And finally an undercoated Manticore. Booring. That's all from today, next time I'll have some more updates on the base of the Vendetta, the melta guy, the Griffon and the undercoated Manticore. - Cheers, Perkele

I've got some more pictures. I did some more converting on the models. First the Priests. I modified the pose of this other guy's arms since it'd be quite boring if they both were holding their axes with the exactly same pose. I think they still need something to look different to each other. The Grey Hunters. I removed the HUGE belt buckle since it felt like a bit over-the-top. The flamer guy. I did some sculpting on the Hunters' hair, now they all have long hair. Why? Because they're rebels and do what they want to! Some bolter guys. I guess that's it. very 80s hair metal band, awesome

Solid work my friend well done. The lenses on the bottom of the chimera hulls are amazing! Personally I feel the edge highlighting on the black is too light, a darker grey would perhaps be batter. Apart from that I cannot fault them

Thanks! Unfortunately this update is going to be the last one for a few months. Since my IG army is in a good enough shape to be taken to tournaments, I need to move on my other army projects for some time. At the moment my IG and WHFB O&G armies are painted, but my WHFB Bretonnians and VC need lots of work and I really want to start taking one of them to tournaments (and have them painted for other reasons as well). My plan is to get either my Bretonnians or VC painted before mid-October (there's a big tournament coming then), and that means I probably won't have any time to get my spruce swamp fighters painted. Anyhow, here's the painted Griffon. Her name is Kyllikki, late wife of Ilmarinen. She got murdered by frustrated Kullervo because she treated him like **** and broke his only memento of his parents (his dagger). Inb4 open-topped jokes! The pics are kinda bad this time, I just couldn't get the lights right today. Some angry crewmen here. The latter one is a metallic crewman of the old classic mortar. That's all for now. Like I said, I won't be painting my IG stuff for some time now, but one day I'll be back and I'll finish the army. Maybe I'll update this blog every now and then if I paint a Commissar or a couple of Space Wolves or something like that, but the next few months I'm going to be busy with my WHFB armies again. Thanks for your support and interest in this blog, it's always great to hear people like the stuff I paint. Stay cool! - Cheers, Perkele

I really like the crisp painting! They're looking ace! Keep up the good work!
Although using space wolves as allies... Dude, we all know that blood angels is the way to go ;-) well, besides the joking, looking forward to see the painted doggies!
And that you're using the kalleva myth for names and details is awesome! I thought about using the caroleans as an inspiration for a force, either SM or IG, but found that they would either look like ultramarines or mordians...

Thank you both!
@ Ivory: Unfortunately I haven't yet even started working on the Stormtroopers, but I won't be getting rid of them so they'll be done eventually. They are either those kinds of figures that I'm going to paint between long WHFB sessions because they're so different or I'm going to paint them when I properly come back working on the IG army - no idea yet though.

Nice! Effective conversion of the Basilisk into a Griffon, and I approve of the use of the old mortar loader as a crewman, since I've done/will be doing the same with all my Catachan self-propelled artillery.

I'm back with some more progress on my Catachan army and its puny Space Wolf allies. There's an interesting 40k tournament coming exactly after two months, and I'm planning on getting my IGs and Wolves painted properly before that. The tournament is 1500 points with a cool special rule named Highlander. That's basically exactly same as the Highlander in MtG, in other words you can't have any duplicate unit choices in your army. The Troops and their transports are the only exceptions, you can have max two of the same Troop/transport choices if you have a different Troop/transport choice for each duplicate, but that's only for wusses - stick with the true Highlander theme! Here's my army list for the tournament: ARMY PRIMARY DETACHMENT DESCRIPTION : Imperial Guard ARMY ALLIED DETACHMENT DESCRIPTION : Space Wolf
PRIMARY DETACHMENT:HQ 1: Primaris Psyker: force axe = 70. [Warlord] ELITE 1: Private Joker = 65. TROOPS 1-0: Platoon command squad: 4 flamers = 50. TROOPS 1-1: Infantry squad: autocannon, sergeant with melta bombs & power axe = 75. TROOPS 1-2: Infantry squad: autocannon, sergeant with melta bombs & power axe = 75. TROOPS 1-3: Infantry squad: autocannon, sergeant with melta bombs & power axe = 75. TROOPS 1-4: Infantry squad: autocannon, sergeant with melta bombs & power axe = 75. TROOPS 1-5: Infantry squad: autocannon, sergeant with power axe = 70. TROOPS 2: Veteran Squad: 3 flamers = 85. FAST 1: Vendetta gunships (2x) = 260. HEAVY 1: Manticore: heavy flamer = 160. HEAVY 2: Leman Russ: heavy flamer = 150. HEAVY 3: Griffon: heavy flamer = 75. ALLIED DETACHMENT:HQ 1: Rune Priest: Jaws of the World Wolf, Murderous Hurricane, melta bombs = 105. TROOPS 1: Grey Hunters (5x): flamer = 75. TRANSPORT 1: Drop pod = 35. No idea how well the list will do, but I think it's okay. The lack of the Commissars is kinda worrying, but I can't find the points to get a Lord one if I want to take the Psyker and the Joker - hopefully the Ld9 of the Psyker will be enough. I'm waiting for getting most of the stuff in action, I can't wait how the Autocannons, the Russ, the allies and the Psyker will do. Since there's only one blob, I won't need to paint my finger paint legion just yet. As some of you might remember, I painted ~ 20 spruce swamp fighters with basic colours before the previous tournament, so I can just start doing the highlights and they're finished. What I need to paint is the Leman Russ, the whole allied detachment and two Autocannons. Also the Primaris Psyker, but he's already done. I have two months to paint these things, but since I have some WHFB Vampire Counts models to paint as well, I will be spreading the projects neutrally to get both armies finished before the tournament (there's a big WHFB tournament coming a week before the Highlander tournament, that's why). Enough of my babbling, here's some pictures! First of all my Primaris Psyker I finished today. He's a Laplander shaman with a force axe, converted from a Sanctioned Psyker. I think the conversion worked out quite well if I may say so myself, but the painting needs "something". His outfit is the traditional Saami national costume to make him more noticeable. Then my WIP Leman Russ. This tank was in the big army deal I got from my buddy when I started this army, but it needed some fixing before painting. One of the smoke launchers and the searchlight were missing, the hull weapon wasn't what I wanted (it was a lascannon, but I exchanged it to a heavy flamer from a Sentinel kit) and it was full of unnecessary guns like two heavy bolters and a guy with a heavy stubber. After fixing these things, green stuffing the gaps a bit and adding an antenna to it, it's good to go for the undercoat. At the moment it's undercoated black and ready for painting (pic obviously before the undercoat). I need to paint two Autocannons as well, but fortunately I built the models a long time ago so I could go straight to basing them. The bases are still WIP. Then some updates on the Space Wolves. I have started basing them as well, also I added the wolf standard to one of them. I guess I have to infiltrate it to the army list as well. And finally a pic of the Drop Pod. Yep, I started painting it just like the IGs. I decided to got with the black and khaki power armours, since that way they look original, they fit to the IG theme perfectly and I personally like the colour theme quite much. They are kinda like the super drunkards of the army, they have their superior equipment and stats but deep inside they are still the same spruce swamp fighters as the others. "Team Boozewolves". Mind you the Drop Pod is still very WIP. That's all from today, thanks for reading this whole thing if you did so. Just having my occasional update here like I promised when I left. Within the next two months there will be several updates as I'm getting the army ready for the Highlander tournament. - Perkele

Thanks! I have an another update here. The Drop Pod is still WIP and the painting of it has been a goddamn experience. I don't know what's wrong with me or the model, but this has been the most awful painting experience I've almost ever faced. The process is lagging like a drunken ogryn in a barn dance and the inspiration is dead like a Cadian in a Finnish bear trap. There's no flow whatsoever, so I'm going to leave the Pod alone for a moment and try to paint other stuff. But I already know the name of the Pod, it's called Rasputin. The Space Wolf allies are representing tough Russian warriors, who will join the same spirited (pun intended, they both operate with vodka) Finnish spruce swamp troops and their Sami companions - as long as you are a tough, drunken warrior, you're welcome to the army! Then three new spruce swamp fighters. I started finishing my ~ 20 started guys. Doing the highlights is relaxing, especially after trying to paint a big and irritating model for several days. A basic puukkomies ("knife guy"). A sniper, I field him as a counts as lasgunner because the model is so awesome but the sniper rules are pretty lame. And a converted guy with binoculars from the heavy weapon team set. Finally a couple of shots of my next painting projects. The wolf cultists are undercoated. And the next three spruce swamp fighters I'll finish. That's all from today, hope you liked them.

In tonight's episode: some more guardsmen! *DUN DUN DUUN*I did some small kitbashing on these guys as well, you may recognize some parts from catachan command and heavy weapon teams. And the usual head swaps, too. The first one, squelching around in the refreshing swamp sludge. The second one, using his flashlight to bring down some Obliterators as usual. And the third one. I just today realized some of these guys have watches around their wrists, and of course I had to spend some time with them. I think this one turned out much better than I first thought. Finally, one of the more important things. I started painting my Grey Hunters, and the test model is now ready. I'd love to hear your opinions about this one, personally I'm not sure if I like him or not - I mean I like the overall look of him, but maybe he needs something? I decided to go and name all of my marines since there aren't many of them, say hello to Vadim. That's all from tonight, like I said, I'd love to hear your opinions especially about the marine. This weekend is going to be quite busy since we're going to start building some more gaming tables. Our gaming group will organize a WHFB tournament in November or December, and we have 8 tables (and terrain pieces for them) to build - that'll keep us busy for some time, but I'll get some more updates here next week.

Another WHFB tournament is now done, and it sure did go well for my orcs & goblins army - I managed to get the best general award! As an added bonus I got flu, but the tournament was great anyway as expected. Now it's time to return to painting 40k stuff. I have started painting my Leman Russ for the big 40k tournament coming in six weeks. I after all decided to go and play 40k instead of WHFB in the event (there are both 40k and WHFB tournaments there) because a couple of my buddies wanted to borrow my O&G and VC armies for the event. I think this is a good opportunity to get some more 40k models painted, and even better, get some more 40k games. Anyway, the Leman Russ is still WIP and today I don't have any pics of it. BUT I have done some work on my guardsmen. I realized my Veterans cannot be distinguished from regular infantry blokes in any way, so I did some small converting on them - now all of them have backpacks. Also I got the remaining five Veterans painted. And here's a nice group shot. Then some group shots of my infantry blokes and how they are getting painted. 40 guardsmen, four of them which are still WIP. These are going to be the remaining 10 guardsmen. Here are the Veterans again. And here's some command squads. In the background you can see Hitler's CCS and in the front Stalin's PCS. And as a bonus here's a sneak peak of something I bought on the tournament trip - Doom the board game and its expansion set, 70€ total. That's a ridiculously low price since the expansion set is quite rare nowadays and the Doom itself is OOP as well if I recall correctly. These will certainly take some of my attention for a while now. That's all from today, hope you like them. - Perkele

Am I the first one to answer? I really like your SW. Those colours fit perfectly together and make a great combination. I would use some more wash on the fur though and did more highlight, especially on the backpack. Other than that - good job, sir! Adding backpacks to the veterans is also a good idea, I'll do the same with some of my vets. ;p And it's always nice to see the group shots of painted army, I wish I can paint my minis that fast (wchich remind me I still have some Eldars to paint first )... Anyway, keep them coming, waiting especially for your Russ. Cheers, Batou.

Thank you both! I have another marine painted here. I haven't had a lot of time to paint since we've been having lots of gaming nights lately, but at least there's some progress on the army. I tried highlighting his backpack more, but it seems that the lightning of the picture has eaten some of the highlights away. Anyway, this guy is called Boris. Because I have only 8 marines (10-2 priests), I decided to go and magnetize his wolf standard so I can take it or leave it home whenever I want to. ("Skarsnik the Lord" is my nick on the other forums, don't mind it) That's all from today, not the greatest update but that'll do for now. Next time I'll have something else, I might finish my Leman Russ or start painting some more guardsmen. This weekend will be spent making some more terrain for our upcoming WHFB tournament - the date is now confirmed as 7.-8.12., we got a chef (one of our buddies) to cook for the players and we are getting quite excited already!

You are getting better and better with every mini you paint. I will say again - those colours for the marines were good choice IMO. Highlight on backpack is good, personally I think it looks better now. And all those freehand painting are just briliant! I'm waiting for more! Oh, can we see your WHFB armies somewhere?
