Is a punisher with heavy bolter sponsons and a heavy stubber a good idea? or would it be better with melta sponsons and/or storm bolter?

Definitely no melta sponsons! Punisher with HB's and Stubber could probably do a hurting, especially with Pask, but this gets expensive. While I like the Punisher, it isn't one of our heaviest hitters. Probably be better with an Exterminator with HB's and Stubbers or even our good ole LRMBT with sponsons and stubber.

I already have a normal russ with HBs and a stubber but liked the idea of the 20 shots from the gatling cannon, 29 shots at a single squad...byebye orks

And that is the unlikely case you actually hit with all 20 shots. Granted, it is only a 6+...You could still get more kills with Exterminator or LRMBT for lower cost to you.

I run this set up on an exterminator to great effect. Not tried on the punisher, but should work.

I think you should also flip back a page or two and look at some previous posts and opinions on the punisher.

Punishers... groovy looking tanks, lousy performance. You'd be far better to go for the exterminator in my opinion - cheaper and probably more effective against... well... everything...

Against some armies a Punisher with all HBs sounds good. The range is the only issue, buuut against deepstriking terminators it gives you a shot at totally blowing 'em full of holes.

And an executioner blows termies full of holes and gives them no 2+ saves. Thisis the problem with the punisher, its overpriced and there are generally things that can do its job better than it can.

There are really more cost effective options than the Punisher, which, while it looks great on paper, really falls far short of its expectations. It's also rather expensive, and short ranged, putting it in danger of a quick death, and not many turns of shooting.

The punisher exists for fun purposes only. It's not meant to be fielded when you want to win a game.

simple answer, punisher is one of the best looking tanks we have ( what can get better then a tank with a massive gatling gun i ask you, maybe a massive plasma cannon but shh! ) so field a punisher as a exterminator best of both worlds . Or you can get another platoon

And for less points.
Go look at the GW battle reports where they were used. The guy lost badly. But in fairness, it wasn't just taking a punisher that did that...

Army selection was bad, Planetstrike heavily favors the attacker, and he made some really really really bad in game decisions.

Planetstrike only heavily* favors the attacker when the defender doesn't think like a defender.
*Your mileage may differ, but I've had no trouble as the defender when I'm willing to be a low-down, dirty skank about keeping enemy minis away from my sweet objectives.

How many people think like a defender though?

It's not hard. You just have to be dirty with the rules, and blow up your own stuff, rather than let the other guy have it.

the punisher is 200 points of aesthetic, and if you are lucky you may hold a psychological edge up until you fire it.. but I still refuse to turn mine into an executioner... amidst all the templates something has to use regular bullets, and it does serve well as a mop at the end of battles...

The punisher is so cool, I will get one to put on my shelf soon.
What use it? Well for fun perhaps but I wouldn't count on it for one second.
